The Breaking of Ezra Riley The Ezra Riley Series Book 1 edition by John Moore Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews
Just discovered John L. Moore's work and it is very special! This book is a real page-turner, couldn't put it down.
I read this book because I grew up near the author. I saw his family and others mixed in with fictitious characters, but it was well written, a few typos that might have been passed on in making an eBook, but it made me want to reach for the second in the series. Well done!
The author writes extremely well and creates wonderful word pictures of cowboy life. The verbiage is raw, colorful, and untamed creating a very real, personal feel for the characters. The characters are well rehearsed, deep, full of angst, and add great depth to the plot. The author relies on historical data to paint a real-life picture of life in the west and has an acute insight into the vagaries of human character using both to make an interesting and captivating novel. The writer leads the reader into the depths of what makes people people yearning to become better people
John Moore roped me in and pulled so tight, I couldn't let go. This book is a modern classic. A story of a western family and the land that either entraps them or sets them free. I didn't want it to end.
I have two paper copies of "The Breaking of Ezra Riley" and wanted one on my as well. I am now on my fourth reading of this book. This is the best novel I have read in decades, but I could be considered biased since I grew up in the city (Miles City, Montana) that this novel takes place. I identify with the characters and appreciate the depth of characterization found in the book. These are people you really care about and you don't want the story to end. The plot is believable and true to life. This isn't a typical "Western" novel because it is very literate. It was a runner up for the Golden Spur Award and received rave reviews when it first came out.
I guarantee that you will enjoy reading this novel and will want to read it more than once!
This is a first cut at a rating, something I have never done. I have read only a few pages and will update it after I finish the book. The writing is as good as I have ever run across--and I have read a lot of books over many years. The writing flows seamlessly, is increadablly descriptive and is emotionally evocative. I hope the one review I saw regarding an unsatisfactory ending will not fully reflect my opinion when I finish the book. I really hope to confirm my initial rating. UPDATE--finished the book and still believe it warrants 5 stars. I can't say that this book was enjoyable, which is what I am generally looking for from reading. However, it is very well written and presents a powerful story. I believe it is a worthwhile read.
What a great read!
I usually stick to mystery's, and I don't particularly like cowboy
novels, but this author was on a forum I visit, and I thought,
"I have nothing to lose."
It's the story of a family ranch in Montana over the span of 30 yrs.
Youngest son Ezra, comes home after his strict father dies.
He decides to try and keep the ranch running, for the sake of his mother.
There were times when I had tears in my eyes as I read his struggle.
He came to love the land, and then the land made life miserable.
Nobody says, "Just get some food stamps." Proud ranchers don't like charity.
His wife is a saint, his son is just like him as a boy, and he has
unbelievable burdens on his shoulders.
I'm not sure the ending was satisfying, I wanted resolution,
and I didn't find it. I might need to find the next chapter.
